How to Disable Ads in Adobe Reader

Find out how to remove the advertisements in the top right corner of Adobe Reader (version 6 and 7).

With advertisements in the top right corner, we mean this:

advertisement in top right corner of Adobe Reader
Ads in Adobe Reader 7 (German)

Adobe itself describes the advertisements as an "internet feature" which suggests that Adobe Reader tries to download new advertisements when your computer is connected to the internet. If you would like to remove the advertisements for this reason or just because you find them annoying, you cannot do this by using the graphical user interface of Adobe Reader. Instead, you have to edit the Windows Registry.

To disable the advertisements, browse to the following registry key (if it does not exist, you have to create it):

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\
   Acrobat Reader\X.0\FeatureLockdown]

Replace the X with the version number of your Adobe Reader (6 or 7). For example, if you use version 7, the key would be ...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\
   Acrobat Reader\7.0\FeatureLockdown]

Now create the DWORD value bShowAdsAllow and set its data to 0 if you want to disable the ads (and 1 if you want the ads back).

If you want to change the settings for the current user only, use HKEY_CURRENT_USER instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Note that settings for current users overrride the setting for all users.

For your convenience, the following preconfigured registry files are available for download (tested with Windows XP). Right click the according file and choose "Save as...". After having saved it, you just have to double-click it and the changes will be automatically applied to the Windows Registry:
